QUALITY of INDIVIDUAL EXPERIENCE

Quality of individual experience — what it is actually like to be the person inside an educational process — and what it is in that process that makes it so.

At the heart of the LCA is "Individual Experience." Quality of experience is a term that invites questions about this experience: not whether individual experience is present — it always is — but what kind. What is the experience? What impact is it having on an individual's capacity to live their life fully, with enjoyment and engagement?

Measures of education ask what was taught, what was learned, what was scored. These are the easy questions, and that is why they dominate educational discourse: they convert readily into tables, targets, slides and additive lists.

But a person can be a complete success by every one of those measures and still be left feeling empty, with a sense that they are living a life that is not their own. How many of us know someone who studied hard, did everything that was asked of them and succeeded by every available measure — and yet who is not a happy human being?

The idea of quality of experience has long been present in educational thought. Dewey gave it its clearest grounding in his principle of interaction: an experience is never purely something happening to a person, nor purely something the person generates from within. It is a dynamic give and take between the person and their surroundings, each shaping and being shaped by the other. The individual participates in what they undergo; what is lived is co-created rather than delivered.

On the diagram, Awareness, Choice and Trust sit closest to that centre of Individual Experience. ACT is where the quality of an individual's experience is felt and exercised — which is why the term belongs here rather than anywhere else in the architecture. Each of the three can be read simultaneously in the person and in the externals of the system; and each of these readings holds at a single moment of experience and over an extended period.

None of this sits outside dignity. Dignity is what makes quality of experience worth asking about in the first place. It is not a fourth term alongside awareness, choice and trust, but the ground the whole architecture stands on.
